Levi’s just did something audacious.

They took one of the most famous naked guys in history and dressed him in denim.

Levi’s recreated Michelangelo’s David – the famous marble masterpiece that’s been standing in Florence since 1504.

But instead of cold stone, they rendered him wearing a pair of their classic blue jeans.

The visual is striking because it’s instantly recognizable, yet completely unexpected.

You see David, but he’s wearing denim.

The copy reads: Since 1873 with the tagline Since Denim Began.

This ad works because it draws a parallel between Levi’s jeans and Michelangelo’s statue.

David is one of the most famous sculptures in the world because Michelangelo helped define Renaissance art by creating a David unlike any before it.

He changed what the entire art world thought was possible with sculpture.

By putting jeans on David, Levi’s isn’t just borrowing credibility from art history.

They’re making a statement: “We’re both originators, and we’re both timeless.”

And that tagline “Since Denim Began” is doing all the heavy lifting here.

Levi’s doesn’t need to go on about product quality or their jeans’ features.

Instead, they just need to remind everyone that they invented denim pants.

So when a competitor like Gap, Wrangler, or any other denim brand talks about their history, they can only talk about when they joined the game.

When Levi’s talks about their jeans’ history, they’re talking about when they created the game.

Sometimes the boldest move is knowing when to say less and let your legacy do the talking.

Levi’s redefined the entire pants industry when they created their denim jeans.

This next ad is redefining how to advertise off-road cars (and no, it’s NOT a Jeep ad).
