What do you do when your entire company gets blown up because of the indiscretion of two executives?
You clap back.
If you have an internet connection, then you’ve heard about the Coldplay Kiss Cam incident.
And if you’re one of the few people living under a rock, here’s a quick recap…
Astronomer (an AI company) found themselves in a huge scandal when their CEO and head of HR were caught red-handed on camera by … well … violating the HR handbook at a Coldplay concert (you can Google the rest 🌐).
And it all wouldn’t have been a thing if Chris Martin – Coldplay’s lead singer – didn’t point it out on stage.
For almost two weeks now, the kiss cam video has been making its rounds on social media.
And honestly, I’m sick of seeing it ALL. THE. FREAKING. TIME. and can’t wait for it to finally blow over.
But until then, I’m regretfully talking about it because there’s an advertisement lesson here (cause no, I’m not starting a celebrity gossip tabloid 🤭).
This whole time, we’ve been waiting to hear from Astronomer’s advertising team.
And just two days ago, they dropped the best clapback ad they could come up with.
Here’s the full ad 👈
Other than the clever side-stepping around the internet’s most burning question, the ad itself isn’t too special.
But the reason it’s breaking the internet is their new temporary spokesperson: Gwyneth Paltrow.
Why?
Because Gwyneth is Chris Martin’s ex-wife 😈.
Astronomer called Coldplay’s move and raised it.
This ad broke the typical rules (start with a great hook, have a clear CTA, etc.).
But everyone – including news stations – is talking about it.
Let this be a reminder that in advertising, there are no rules.
At the end of the day, the memorable ads are the best ads.
P.S. Out of all the memes, here’s my favorite one so far.
