Oreo turns internet culture into marketing gold:
I’m not going to lie, I actually like grocery shopping.
With my weekly list in hand, I zip through the aisles like I’m on a high-stakes episode of Supermarket Sweep. 🛒
Because when I don’t have a list? My cart ends up looking like a sugar-deprived kindergarten class drained my bank account (hey… we listen, and we don’t judge, remember 🤫).
Whenever I’m shopping with someone and we spot a random item tossed where it clearly doesn’t belong, I always say:
“A decision was made here.”
What started as a Reddit meme has become everyone’s cheesy joke (in the cheese aisle, of course 🧀).
Turns out, Oreo is in on the joke too.
They posted a photo of a loaf of bread sitting in the Oreo section with the caption: A Decision Was Made Here.
It’s a playful nod to internet culture
This ad works because Oreo is using a relevancy hook – a tactic that instantly connects the message to something the audience already knows, loves, or laughs at.
It feels timely and relatable.
And without saying it outright, Oreo frames itself as the better choice.
Because let’s be honest: Who needs boring old bread… when you could have cookies?
This subtle positioning reminds you that Oreos are irresistible.
Oreo could also have expanded this campaign with the copy:
One Of These Things Doesn’t Belong Here (another Reddit joke).
Both would speak well to their audience.
